Conception of the Human Psyche

Conscious : Thoughts we are aware of
Preconscious ( super ego)  : Thoughts we dwell close
Unconscious ( non-conscious): Thoughts the are buried
*Ego is freefloating in all 3 levels

The ID

  • We are born with our ID
  • ID is an important part of personality
  • Based on our pleasure principles
  • Wants whatever feels good at the time, no consideration for the reality of the situation
  • Common in babies
  • All about themselves
EGO

  • 3 years a child interacts more with the world
  • Second part of personality develops
  • Ego is the second personality
  • Ego is based on reality principles
  • Other people have needs and desires ( sometimes being selfish can hurt)
  • Ego is to meet the needs of the ID
  • Consider the reality of the situation
  • Recognition of your needs
Superego

  • Age of 5 Superego develops
  • Moral part of human beings
  • Develops because of moral and ethical restraints placed on by caregivers
  • Dictates beliefs of right and wrong
  • Suppress your needs to help others

Balance

Healthy Person-
Ego is strong to satisfy the needs of the ID and not upset the superego. Understand and analyse the reality of the situation.

* If ID takes over self gratification will take over a persons life ( selfish person)
* If a superego becomes strong a person will be living by rigid morals and would be judgmental in their interactions towards the world. ( fundamentalism)

---------

id: I want it now
EGO: I need to plan to get it
Superego : You cant have it. Its not right
